Replace Intel Core 2 Duo Default Heatsink With Cooler Master Hyper TX2

For so many years I’ve been using Intel-based computer, I never care about CPU heatsink and cooling device, because I believe the default heatsink and cooling fan bundled with the boxed Intel processor is good enough for computer system used in room temperature or non-extreme environment.

At least I can tell that none of the 5 home Desktop I’ve built has found a processor burnt, as a result of using default heatsink and cooling fan.
However, the recent overheated Core 2 Duo problem on my own Desktop really wake me up to think about heat dissipation issue seriously.

Although the processor was not burnt or became malfunction immediately after operating at above 80℃ for hours, I believe the processor lifespan is shorten significantly :-(.

The overheated Core 2 Duo hangs up Windows Vista after the machine was powered off for a week could be a fact that the Intel processor had been operating at higher than usual temperature for months.

As I recall, the Windows Vista overall responsiveness is getting slower and slower, even daily defragmentation process didn’t improve the situation much.

In fact, the screenshot of Intel Processor ID Utility and Asus PC Probe II clearly indicate that both processor core speed decrease when the Core 2 Duo operating temperature recorded at 80℃!

As I’d damaged the original Core 2 Duo heatsink fasteners that caused loose contact between heatsink and processor surface (hence resulting inefficient heat dissipation), I’ve to replace it with a 3rd party heatsink and cooler fan.

In this case, I choose Cooler Master Hyper TX2 for these points of consideration:

1) The Cooler Master brand and its history in Intel processor cooling device
2) Cheap price tag
3) Easy installation (no need to dismantle the mounted motherboard in order to fix the new heatsink)
4) Compatibility with Intel Core 2 Duo LGA 775 packaging
5) Better than or slightly better than original heatsink (no point to get an alternative that’s worse than original heatsink)

Although the Cooler Master Hyper TX2 comes with push pin clip design (similar to the broken fasteners), I never find Hyper TX2 installation is any simple than original Core 2 Duo heatsink!

That’s probably my bad luck – 2 of the push pin fasteners are too tight to push down and locked.

In addition, its “special” fan duct design (a cap-alike plastic duct to direct cool air to CPU and surrounding components) is really a big obstacle to fix such a bulky heatsink onto the motherboard easily!

Now the Desktop is running for about 3 days and 6 hours continuously (according to Windows Vista uptime / last boot up time command), the Asus PC Probe II reports Core 2 Duo processor operating temperature is swings between 49℃ and 54℃ while CPU usage reported by Windows Vista Task Manager is about 45% constantly.

This processor temperature is slightly better than another Core 2 Duo Desktop in the same room temperature with default heatsink.

Apparently, the copper-based and high-density aluminium heat sink fin with 3 embedded heat pipes design doesn’t outperform Intel original heatsink significantly!

Any other defects of Hyper TX2? Besides difficult installation, the bundled cooler fan doesn’t come with PWM fan controller, meaning that the fan speed is rather fixed (1800 RPM) and not a 4-pins cooler fan (the 4th pin is used to control fan speed or RPM using PWM, a.k.a. Pulse-width modulation).

As I can’t fix the 3-pin cooler fan to the dedicated power pin on Asus P5B-Plus motherboard, it’s connected to the power pin labelled for power fan. Hence, the BIOS complain about this and force me to press F1 to proceed boot up, as there is no CPU fan detected :-(
Cooler Master Hyper TX for Intel version include PWM fan controller and 4-wire fan power connector. Cooler Master Hyper TX2 that is universal for both Intel LGA 775 and AMD processor is not of this standard :-(

As the cooler fan speed fixed to 1800 RPM is much lower than the original Intel cooler fan, it’s more silent. (The heat dissipation could be more efficient if the cooler fan spin as fast as the Intel cooler fan.)

Overall, Cooler Master Hyper TX2 is a potential candidate to replace the original Intel heatsink and cooler fan for Core 2 Duo or LGA 775 processor. To achieve more efficient heat dissipation, you’ve to burn more bucks in pocket first :-) to get a more expensive heatsink, such as Asus Silent Knight!

    I also own the hyper tx2. The motherboard can control the fan speed through voltage, my gigabyte motherboard can do this. My cpu temps now range from 30 to 42 degC and fan speeds range from 900-1800. The problem I have with the TX2 is that the fan almost broke itself in two. I crazy glued it back together but thats probably just a temp fix. I hope screw holes of a regular 90mm will line up correctly.

    Same problem here, the computer shut down as it overheated and found the fan blade cracked and not operating. The computer is just over a year old. I have searched but have been unable to locate a fan replacement .
