Shortcut To Remove Installed Application From Nokia 5800 Or S60v5

Am just discover a relatively faster way to remove installed program from Nokia 5800, which I think is applicable to other smartphone powered by Symbian OS 9.4 or S60 5th Edition software platform.

Without going through such a long way: Menu > Settings > Application Manager > Installed Apps > Options > Uninstall, you can try this alternative:

1) Go Menu > Apps, which is the default folder storing 3rd-party programs.

If the application icon was moved (via Options > Organise) to appear on Menu screen, the trick is applicable too.

2) Tap on the application icon and slide it aside then release – this is to select the program icon (highlight it) without activate / execute it.

3) Click Options and then select Remove – isn’t this is a “better” way to uninstall apps from S60v5!

Note, it is only possible to uninstall 3rd-party apps but not those bundled with Nokia device software update, unless referring to “unusual” method which I yet to know how (if you do, please be kind to share). Good luck.

How To Use AlternateReader On Touchscreen Phone?

The tips of using AlternateReader on Nokia 5800 is on YouTube, but if you can’t follow my lame video guide featuring silence of me, then here you go.

As mentioned in previous post, AlternateReader is an open-source DJVU and PDF reader freeware for S60v3, S60v3 FP1/FP2, and S60v5 (a.k.a. Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2/9.3, and 9.4)

Technically, S60 or Series 60 User Interface is a software platform runs on Symbian OS.

Tips of using AlternateReader on a touchscreen smartphone

Note, AlternateReader takes time to open and display a page with graphic or image, as a result of low power mobile phone processor.

If so happen the first page of PDF e-book featuring a graphical cover page, then please be patient for the PDF reader freeware to display the content.

1) After installing AlternateReader, you can open the PDF document from the inbuilt Nokia File Manager.

2) After opening PDF document, click Options and choose “Full screen mode”. Then, tap on the touchscreen without release it for 3-5 seconds or until the context menu pops up and choose “Fit width” – this give you the best reading experience, as the page is fully maximized at best resolution the phone hardware can provide.

The pops up context menu featuring options for “go to page”, exit, normal mode, zoom in/out, open file, etc.

3) The magic of single tap and double tap:

When you’re reading on the top of page, single tap on the bottom of touchscreen is to move page down by one screen.
While the reader rendering the middle of page, single tap on the top of touchscreen is to move the page up by one screen.
To read previous page, move the page up to the top and then double tap on the top-right corner of the touchscreen.
To read next page, move the page down to the bottom and double tap on the bottom-right corner of the page

4) Slide up and down on the touchscreen for page scrolling – that is intuitive.

AlternateReader: Powerful S60v5 PDF Reader Freeware For Nokia 5800

If you’re looking for a true S60v5 PDF reader freeware for Nokia / Symbian smartphone, think about AlternateReader and forget about buying QuickOffice Adobe Reader LE 2.5.

AlternateReader is an open source project based on Poppler and DjvuLibre, initiated by kind Vasily Kharitonov, to develop a DJVU and PDF reader for Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 (i.e. S60 3rd Edition, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, S60 5th Edition).

In the test using Nokia 5800, AlternateReader is capable to open a 34MB PDF document file without complaining memory error!

As you can see in this video, AlternateReader is slow when rendering a page with graphic / image (due to low power CPU of the phone), but it is responsive when opening those plain text pages:

Free Java Apps Turn Cellphone Into Graphing Calculator

I was introduced a new JAVA freeware that can plot mathematical graph for given formula on smart phone.

If you work with graphs regularly (or on and off), then maybe you will like to have one installed. After all, it is freeware.

Graphing Calculator is not a Symbian program but can be installed to run on most Nokia smart phones as if it is a S60v3 / S60v5 apps. Indeed it works on most smart phones, not just Nokia, that support Java, especially those support MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1.

If you’re not sure, search the list of compatible handsets in the program home page to see if Graphing Calculator can works in yours.

Unlock Nokia 5800 With Fingerprint

Sick of using the old fashion way of entering lock code to unlock Nokia 5800? What about unlock it with touch of fingerprint?

There is this S60v5 apps called FingerPrint V2.8 to make your dream comes true (at a cost of 5 bucks), as shown in the screenshots taken from ThinkChange.mobi!

FingerPrint V2.8 is developed for touchscreen-based smart phone running Symbian S60v5 only, which include but not limited to Nokia 5800, N97, 5230, 5530, N97 mini, X6.

With FingerPrint V2.8, you have an alternative option to unlock the smart phone by placing finger to the screen to be scanned for authentication.

During the fingerprint scanning, there will be vibration and beep sounds. Then the phone is unlocked, regardless whose finger it is :-)

What?!?! Ops, I am sorry for the cheating. FingerPrint V2.8 is just a S60v5 apps made for fun and you may like to use it fooling friends.

Depends on the apps setting you have made, it will “unlock” the phone after a number of beep sounds or vibrations.

E.g. if “Unlock condition (times)” is set to 3, then you have to remove finger from touchscreen after hearing 3 beeps or 3 times of vibration, otherwise the “Access Denied” is shown. If it is set to 0, the phone “unlocked” once your finger is removed after pressing fingerprint.

How To Use Nokia Photo Browser?

The freeware Nokia Photo Browser is more attractive than my Nokia 5800 default image browser. Besides intuitive touchscreen interface, the 3D image gallery and image partial magnification are cool features to play with.

User Guide: Nokia Photo Browser cool features

Rotate the touchscreen to landscape mode and slide the image gallery towards the left or right, you will see the 3D Image Gallery:

While in image gallery mode,

Tap once on the thumbnail to get a full screen view of the image;
Tap once on the maximized image again will revert to thumbnail mode shown in image gallery.

Double tap (tapping twice continuously) the full screen image will switch to full resolution mode. Double tap again will switch full resolution image back to full screen mode.
To pan the full resolution image, just press and move finger on the touchscreen (the thumbnail appears on bottom-left as guide).

When an image is maximized to full screen view, press on the point where you would like to magnify, Nokia Photo Browser will enlarge that point of interest:

Besides, you can slide the maximized image towards right or left in order to see the next or previous image in full screen mode. Take a closer look on the left image (above), there are arrows on the left and right edge.

Looking for a S60v5 image browser with face detection feature? Well, the Nokia Photo Browser has the face recognition function, which makes it easier to see each faces of the group photo in full image resolution mode:

While a group photo is maximized to full screen mode, double tap on one of the faces, Nokia Photo Browser will switch the image to full resolution mode and highlight all the human faces detected with green, square boxes.

To see the next face detected, just slide on the touchscreen towards left or right, Nokia Photo Browser will intelligently switch to display next detected faces in full resolution mode.

In the image gallery mode, press the thumbnail for 2-5 seconds will activate the pop-up menu with options to

Send the image via email, Bluetooth, or upload to Ovi, Flickr or Vox.
Rotate the image, i.e. change the image orientation.
View the image detail, e.g. image path, date and time, resolution
Display the thumbnails in image gallery according to folder name or time order
Delete the image

Close the application properly or it will run at background and flat the battery faster. To close Nokia Photo Browser, just press the cancel call key (red button) or press the thumbnail for 2-5 seconds and then select “exit” option from the pop-up menu.

Downside of Nokia Photo Browser

The freeware doesn’t scan all images stored in the phone memory and memory card. Indeed, Nokia Photo Browser v0.095 only scans the C:\Images (phone memory) and E:\Images (memory card).

To fix it, you have to keep or save all images in either one of the Images folder!

S60v5 Screen Capture Freeware With Landscape Mode Support

Finally, Best Screen Snap v2 is capable to take screenshot in landscape mode! I am happy to have this great screenshot freeware installed on Nokia 5800 for making screen capture of display in landscape mode (horizontal mode, if you want to call that).

As shown in the image above, Best Screen Snap works perfectly as the screen rotates to landscape mode. The earlier version 1.0 just can’t do this flavor.
