If you’re looking for a true S60v5 PDF reader freeware for Nokia / Symbian smartphone, think about AlternateReader and forget about buying QuickOffice Adobe Reader LE 2.5.

AlternateReader is an open source project based on Poppler and DjvuLibre, initiated by kind Vasily Kharitonov, to develop a DJVU and PDF reader for Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 (i.e. S60 3rd Edition, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, S60 5th Edition).

In the test using Nokia 5800, AlternateReader is capable to open a 34MB PDF document file without complaining memory error!

As you can see in this video, AlternateReader is slow when rendering a page with graphic / image (due to low power CPU of the phone), but it is responsive when opening those plain text pages:

Uses Adobe Media Player To Watch FLV Flash Video Offline

Adobe Media Player is a free FLV player, officially released by Adobe.com, allows one to watch FLV Flash videos on local hard disk. Precisely, it is a desktop video player capable of playing both online and offline content, as noted on its FAQ.

Why I prefer this than other free FLV players? I speculate it is likely more secure and reliable than others, as this is an official product – if there is a new release of Adobe Flash Player, and then Adobe Media Player should be aligned to that level too.

Besides playback FLV (Spark or VP6 codec) or F4V (H.264 codec) format, Adobe Media Player capable to play MOV, MP4, MP4V, M4V, 3GP, 3GPP2, and 3G2 video files that are encoded by H.264 and HE-AAC.

Though the Adobe Media Player v1.7 itself is a lightweight apps, it requires Adobe Air runtime to run. So, it is actually an Adobe Air application and the required runtime (v2.02) is about 12MB, both are available freely on Adobe website.

How to read or view DJVU file? If you have IrfanView (one of the popular image viewer freeware), use it to open and read the DJVU file.

If you don’t mind to install yet another freeware on Windows, then I would recommend to use WinDjView – a proper DJVU document file viewer available for Windows and Mac OS, both are freeware released under the terms of GNU GPL.

The Google Chrome plugins is known as Google Chrome Extensions!

After install or upgrade to the latest Google Chrome version 4.x or higher, one can download whatever useful plugins from Google secured website to customize the Chrome web browser with features of preference.

At the time being, there are about 3000 “Google certified” plugins available on Google Chrome Extensions gallery, categorized according to browser, page and content specified actions.

Once the web browser plugin is installed successfully, you can use its function by clicking the shortcut icon in toolbar (unless it is always on automatically). Otherwise, right click the shortcut icon to configure, disable, uninstall or manage the Google Chrome Extensions.

At this moment, my top picked Google Chrome plugin in the list includes Google Translate and AdBlock.

Nokia Photo Browser: A Must-have S60v5 Photo Browser!

Nokia Photo Browser is still the must-have free S60v5 photo browser for my Nokia 5800. I prefer this touchscreen photo browser than the one out of the box, simply because it makes use of touchscreen to easily zoom in and out an image or just enlarge image partially on the point of touch.

What are the Nokia Photo Browser features?

Besides the touchscreen-aware feature, Nokia Photo Browser is also an accelerometer-aware apps, i.e. images automatically rotate between landscape and portrait mode according to screen display.

The face recognition is something worth to mention too. Say you’re looking an image of buddies sitting on staircase, you can easily zoom in to view each of their smiling looks by just double tap on one of the faces, and then a green box appears to activate face detection. Now, just slide the touchscreen and Nokia Photo Browser automatically move to display the next face detected in the image.

Other basic functions included are send and delete image, nice gallery sliding effects, elegant and clean user interface (thanks to touchscreen), etc.

Though one can download Nokia Photo Browser from Ovi Store at no cost (except for data packets), isn’t it better to include or replace the default Gallery photo browser with this goodies in the latest Nokia 5800 firmware? I wonder why Nokia doesn’t do it :-(

Anyway, just go to download Nokia Photo Browser from Ovi Store (click “send to mobile” to receive SMS of the download link, then you can download it over WIFI or 3G network) or download it from Nokia Beta Labs (but be warned that this copy might not be the latest release as compare to the one at Ovi Store).

digestIT 2004: MD5 and SHA-1 File Checksum Freeware For Windows

I stumble upon digestIT 2004 while writing the earlier two posts, which is yet another freeware that integrate MD5 and SHA-1 checksum functionality into the Windows Explorer context menu.

Unlike HashCheck, instead of generate and display file checksum in file properties dialog box, digestIT 2004 allows users to calculate either MD5 or SHA-1 file checksum by activating option in the Windows Explorer context menu – just right click one or more files and access to “digestIT 2004″ menu.

The digestIT 2004 is natively support both 32 and 64-bit Microsoft Windows. It works correctly as I test it in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

So, between HashCheck and digestIT 2004, which is better? I would say both are indeed good as a file checksum freeware for Windows, although I prefer HashCheck for these points:

localization feature (current version 2.1.11 supports 20 languages for user interface)
capable to generate 4 type of file checksum at one go (i.e. CRC-32, MD4, MD5, and SHA-1),
small memory and disk footprint (the 32-bit version consumes less than 100 KiB of disk space),
generate checksum file or verify checksum of files against the hashes stored in checksum files

If you prefer the true “right-click and calculate checksum” interface, digestIT 2004 is no doubt better than HashCheck that require one to access the checksum tab in file properties dialog box.
