Download Cambridge Talking Dictionary For Nokia 5800 From RapidShare

I just realized that Nokia HK has removed the download of Cambridge Talking Dictionary for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

If you have not had downloaded it or has just lost the original zip file hosted in Nokia HK previously, the only hope to get a copy for your Nokia 5800 or other compatible smart phones running S60 5th Edition UI, is to ask Google for third party file hosting sites or forums that might have a “cache” of it.

Personally, I am a bit hesitating to download it from elsewhere other than reputable sources like Nokia.com related web sites.

However, if you don’t have one now and desperate looking for it, that is the only choice. So, if you ask for it, here is one of the 3rd party sources, where you can now download the “talking” dictionary from RapidShare.com.

NOTE: Download and use this copy of Cambridge Talking Dictionary hosted at Rapidshare.com at your own risk, i.e. I don’t warrant it’s a genuine and virus-free copy, as I have no control over the file hosted there.

Play This Little Piano Flash Game

I stumbled upon this little flash game at here. A piano can play nice rhythms if you are good in music :-)

Although I neither a pianist nor I play a piano in my life so far, there is no problem for me to start playing this flash game in no time. Guess what, there are “music notes” of few popular Chinese songs written on the site I found :-)

Therefore, you should able to play this flash-based piano easily as I do. For your convenient, I just duplicate two of them here.

To test it out, use your computer mouse (not that animal called mouse) to click the flash piano once. Then, start to press computer keyboard with reference to that alphabet-based “song book” (below).

In some cases, you might have to turn off the Chinese input, if the flash piano not making any tune.

Besides using computer keyboard, you can also click on the flash piano keyboard. The layout should much like the piano toy made for children, I think.

The latest Microsoft web browser is finally out of beta. Windows Internet Explorer 8, which is bundled with Windows 7 Beta, is available for Windows XP and above.

Is IE8 better than Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Google Chrome?

Well, I’m not going to give you an in-depth technical comparison matrix of all these major web browsers.

However, I would like to say this personally, that both Windows OS and Internet Explorer are not that bad at all. Otherwise, there is no Enterprise using Microsoft products and majority of IT systems are powered by GNU Linux or Apple Macintosh.

So, if you like to have all Microsoft products in one box with the belief that software of the same mother ship will integrated and perform better, if you simply want to prove Internet Explorer 8 is still suck as its predecessors and not web browser par excellence, if you have no choice to install it because of enterprise software policy that favour Microsoft products, or whatever reasons that you must download and install the latest IE8, here are the list of direct download pages and links of Windows Internet Explorer 8:

If you’ve a Nokia 5800 touch touch baby as well as fan of avatar and emoticon, there is a chance to have these fancy features shown in your mobile phone SMS as well.

The Avatar SMS developed by Hong Kong-based Zensis Limited is co-hosted by Nokia HK as the latest Symbian freeware for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Is the cost per SMS higher than plain text SMS that is without animated avatar and emoticon? The answer is NO :-)

Why? According to Avatar SMS feature list, the animated avatar and emoticon are sent as plain text SMS to recipient. The Avatar SMS at recipient side “decode” and render the plain text with animation accordingly.

So both sender and receiver must have Avatar SMS installed in order to create and read the Avatar SMS. Otherwise, the animated SMS appears as weird ASCII data as those output of uuencode command for sending email attachment in Linux.

Besides animated SMS, another remarkable feature is plugin interface that allow user to add in new accessories and items to customize your very own avatar for the season.

Download Screen Capture Freeware For Nokia 5800 Or S60 5th Edition Nokia Phone

While using Nokia N73, I used Screenshot freeware of Antony Pranata. If you like the Print Screen button or Windows Vista Snipping Tool, Screenshot is the screen capture freeware for mobile phone powered by Symbian OS.

However, Screenshot is only working on S60 3rd Edition user interface – it fails to work on S60 5th Edition UI for touchscreen-based smart phone like Nokia 5800 :-(.
While waiting for the possibility of Antony to post Screenshot for S60 5th Edition (hopefully), I’ve to look for an alternative.

The search mission completed after couple minutes, with this Best ScreenSnap of SmartphoneWare, created on 26th of Dec 2008.

At this time of writing, Best ScreenSnap version 1.00 is offer for download as a Symbian S60 5th Edition freeware.

That’s to say, any (Nokia) phone running on Symbian OS with S60 5th Edition user interface can install and make use of Best ScreenSnap, e.g. Nokia 5800 and the coming Nokia N97.

Similar to Screenshot of Antony, Best ScreenSnap can setup to use the camera capture key to snap screenshots and automatically save the screenshots to user-defined storage (phone memory or microSD memory card).

On top of that, the Best ScreenSnap setting page allows user to define screenshot default quality (higher quality means a bigger size of screenshot) and the default behaviour after taking a screenshot (automatically save to memory or send it via Bluetooth, Infrared, multimedia message or email).

The only defect of this screen capture freeware that bother me is not working with auto-rotate display. Best ScreenSnap capture the screenshot vertically regardless the screen display is shown as vertical or horizontal view (as shown here):

As what I expected, the Nokia at my home country website doesn’t offer any interested Symbian freeware for the touchscreen-based Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Therefore, I browsed Nokia Hong Kong official website and pleased to know that there are many Nokia 5800 compatible or touch-based SIS programs and games offer for zero-cost download.

Best of all, these are freeware, support multilingual interface, and don’t have to sign in for download (except you’re required to “read” the “accept” the lengthy agreement before initiating download process).

Although not everyone likes to install all these freeware, I’m certainly believe that some of these S60 touchscreen-based programs or games are attractive to keep in your Nokia 5800 (or the coming touchscreen-based Nokia phone, e.g. Nokia 6208c, Nokia N97, etc).

So, here are my preferable list of most-wanted Nokia 5800 Symbian freeware and games (order from top to bottom):

Fortune and Fengshui guide for the year of Ox

I bet this is the most-wanted Symbian freeware among Chinese and Fengshui followers! If you’ve doubt of anything related to Fengshui for year 2008, this guide might be helpful.

Other than Fengshui guide, also include general fortune advice for the respective Chinese zodiac in the year of Ox and the screensaver / theme that said bring good luck to people who suffer “bad star” in the year of Ox.

Although I believe Einstein more than a diehard fan of superstition belief, I’m kinda support some part of Fengshui theory that can co-related to scientific explanation.

Overall, this free Fengshui and Fortune guide is relatively comprehensive!

Mail for Exchange

MfE, stands for Mail for Exchange, is a Symbian freeware from Nokia, which in the past is only available for Nokia ESeries and some Nokia NSeries model.

Technically, Mail for Exchange is an ActiveSync client that allow me access on the move a synchronized copy of office emails, calendar entries, contacts, and tasks hosted on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2. (That’s to say, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync must be active and available in order MfE to work.)

If you travel with a Nokia smart phone, Mail for Exchange should be useful (if your office willing to bear the data packet cost charged on your 3G Internet access bill).
Talking Dictionary

Talking Dictionary is really cool and useful to me who has problem in pronunciation :-(

Unlike the bi-directional English-Chinese dictionary that I have in N73, this Cambridge International Dictionary of English with Chinese translation includes pronunciation for most dictionary words.

In additional, Talking Dictionary provides phonetic and example sentence (in both English and Chinese) of the words.

Touchscreen-based Symbian Game

There are six touchscreen-based Symbian game developed by Activate and mBounce, all available free download without any restrictions, multilingual interface, and are quite fun to play with :-)

Out of the six, I kinda like the Motion Dice Box, which makes good use of accelerometer sensor – you can shake the dice by shaking the Nokia 5800, as if the phone is a dice box! There is a similar game in Apple iPod and now I’ve one in my Nokia 5800 too :-).

For those who keen on “bet for fun” during gathering (e.g. the coming Chinese New Year), Motion Dice Box is certainly a best “tool” to have “betting fun” on the move!

The Touch Popper is my favourite as well. I used to poke the bubble wrap (a pliable transparent plastic material commonly used for packing fragile items).

Unlike busting the physical bubble wrap, playing nonsense with Touch Popper doesn’t result in plastic rubbish that is bad for environment :-).

Where to download and How to install these Symbian freeware for Nokia 5800?

If you happen getting “expired certificate” error message during SIS installation, don’t panic or disappointed by this annoyed message.

There is nothing wrong with the expiry date of the SIS installation file and it’s not because of these Symbian freeware restrict installation on non-HK Nokia 5800.

The culprit is bundled microSD memory card! I encountered the same problem earlier but I’ve “fix” it and I have install all of these freeware on my very personal Nokia 5800 :-).

YouTube Downloader: Download YouTube Video For My Mom!

Steve Chen and Chad Hurley created the most wanted video clip hosting site for sharing video collection easier on the Net, that’s YouTube!

YouTuber, the users of YouTube (I call it), like it very much. The reasons are simple: it’s free; it’s really easy to share and really fun to interact with community about the posted video clip collections!

So, active commenter (I am) prefer watching YouTube video clips online than having the videos playback at local hard disk.

However, there is another camp of people (me too), who occasionally would like to download YouTube videos and save them to mobile hard disk or the latest 8GB USB thumb drive.

The reasons? Well, as for me, those are for my mom and dad who are too old and reluctant to learn something about computer! You might want to download them for safekeeping, backup, playback on media server at home, saving the metered broadband usage at home, etc.

OK. For whatever reasons, how could you direct download YouTube video clips (or from any other video hosting sites)?

1) Native way – retrieve video clips from a Web browser cache folder

This native method works for most video hosting sites, as long as you know where is the web browser cache folder that used to temporarily keeping web page contents (including picture, MIDI, MP3, FLV, SWF, etc).

Firefox cache folder:

Type the following Firefox URI in the Address bar, press ENTER, and look for the Cache Directory: path of Disk Cache Device:

about:cache

Vista-IE7 cache folder:

By default installation, you could find the IE7 super-hidden cache folder in Windows Vista at this folder path:

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.ie5

Note: You might need to enable “view hidden files/folders” option in Windows to locate all sub-folders or the browser cache folder itself.

For example, you could find YouTube video clips that finish playback in web browser leaving the cached video files with file name similar to get_video, get_video[1], get_video[2], etc.

Save all these cached file to another folder and rename them with a flash video file extension (i.e. FLV, e.g. get_video to be renamed as video1.flv) and you’re ready to play the YouTube video offline or convert them to other video format as you like.

2) Techie way – retrieve the hidden YouTube video direct download link

This method is only applicable to YouTube video and it’s working at this time of writing.

It’s not really user-friendly but it’s good enough for those who wonder how YouTube Downloader extracts the YouTube video direct download link.

3) Easier way – retrieve the YouTube video download link with YouTube Downloader

There are many YouTube downloader freeware that you could easily find one or two from Google search.

If you’re not serious about downloading YouTube video (to be frank, watching YouTube video online is more fun because of the interactive features), I’ve my friend developed this simple one-click YouTube downloader.

Strictly speaking, it’s not a perfect downloader. For example, sometime it’s not working without hard forcing web browser to refresh (i.e. pressing CTRL+F5 hotkey). And, it doesn’t download the video. Indeed, it merely presents the YouTube video direct download link that described in previous method.
