After a while, another message printed on screen, suggested that N73 is “Unable to activate mass storage mode. Memory card is in use by Messaging application. Change the selected memory in Messaging settings first.”

Now, what you could do? Well, the message printed includes error (the reason of failure) and solution to fix the error reported.

If you have configured N73 to use Mini SD memory card as storage media for its Messaging application (e.g. SMS, MMS, Email, etc), you have to temporarily reset it back to phone memory and retry the Mass Storage mode:
  • Click the Menu key to access Menu screen and then access to Messag.
  • While in Messaging screen, click the Options menu followed by Settings menu
  • In Settings screen, scroll through the list of menu to access Other option
  • Go to Memory In Use and change the Messaging storage media form memory card (e.g. N73SD, the memory card description I’ve set) to Phone Memory. Click OK to save the change.

The first and simple way is by removing the Mini SD card from Nokia N73 and access the memory card via a card reader. Some modern laptops built with such card reader that normally support multiple flash memory card formats.

As one of the expensive Nokia NSeries smart phone, N73 allows add / remove memory card in online mode. To remove memory card while N73 powered on, press the power button and select “Remove Mem. Card” option from the quick menu.

Alternatively, press the Menu key, go to Tools and then Memory. While in Memory Card screen, go to Options and select “Remove Mem. Card”.

Wait for the Remove Memory Card and press “OK” message printed on screen, then you may proceed to remove the Mini SD card and then only press OK. Once you’ve done with the memory card, simply insert it back to N73 Mini SD card slot gently (without needs of power it off).

If there is no card reader to access the Mini SD card, what you could do? Well, the N73 itself is a ready card reader. Indeed, N73 supports USB mass storage mode.

So long as the OS supports USB mass storage device (e.g. Windows Vista SP1 on my home Desktop and Dell Latitude; supposing that most modern OSes such Mac OS X, RHEL, etc, is able to detect and access it as normal), the Mini SD memory card in Nokia N73 will appears as a USB drive, to allow files copy easily without needs of installing additional device driver or application.

Although the Nokia PC Suite is not a must-have program to access N73 USB mass storage function, an optimized driver ensures achieving USB 2.0 full speed file transfer via Nokia proprietary Port-Port interface.

How to configure Nokia N73 mass storage mode to access memory card as USB drive?

Click the menu key, access to Tools and then Data Cbl. While in Data Cable screen, make sure Data Cable Mode is either set to Mass Storage or Ask On Connection.

Then, connect the phone to a computer USB port via CA-53 cable. N73 will prompt you to select mode of connection if the Data Cable Mode is set to “Ask On Connection”.

This is extremely useful when I’ve to copy files to or from the “expensive” Nokia phone I ever own (so far) with a computer that has not yet installed with Nokia PC Suite application, but there must be a card reader OR CA-53 cable AND a computer that supports USB mass storage device (both hardware and software). The bulky Nokia PC Suite, is not a must-have program in either cases.

About 8 hours ago, Nokia informed me (really?) that another Nokia NSeries multimedia computer is scheduled to hit the stores on coming October, with a cheaper selling price set at EUR 450.

This Nokia smart phone comes with a 2.6″ OLED display and a set of standard NSeries features, e.g 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics enhanced with bright dual LED flash and geotagging capabilities, 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity enabled, TV out (PAL/NTSC) with Nokia Video Connectivity Cable (CA-75U, included in box).

Good news for N-Gage users, N85 will be preloaded with at least 10 made-for-mobile N-Gage gaming titles! However, only one voucher given to activate one full game license :-(.

As for music lovers, N85 also comes with in-built FM transmitter, capable of playback DVD-quality videos at 30 frames per second, 3.5 mm audio jack for top-quality headset.

The BL-5K 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery ensures a maximum talk time at 6.9 hours (GSM mode)/4.5 hours (WCDMA mode).

Of course, the easier way is simply save the song as full into a mobile phone and set it as ringtone. With today music phone storage, you could have saved an album of songs as ringing tone. (For example, the latest Apple iPhone 3G comes with at least 8GB of built-in storage!)

At some occasion, however, you might prefer only a portion of tune to play as ringtone. In that case, how could you cut or split that most killing tune out of that MP3? In Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Ultimate, there is a bundled program called Windows Movie Maker, that could do the job.

How to cut or split a tune out of media files to used as mobile phone ringtone, using the Windows Movie Maker in Vista Ultimate?
  1. Locate and open Windows Movie Maker from Vista Orb. Click Import Media icon on the toolbar (or hit CTRL+I hotkey) to browse and import Windows Movie Maker compatible media file (MP3, WMA, WAV, WMV, MPG, etc).
     
  2. Click Play button or double-click the imported media file to play. Click the Split link when your expected tune comes in. After clicking the Split link, there is a new media file name appears in the canvas, e.g. The Look Unplug (1) in my example.

  3. Double-click The Look Unplug (1) to play until your favourite tune ends, then click the Split link again. Now, another new media file name appears as The Look Unplug (2).
     
  4. Drag The Look Unplug (2) media file to Timeline (at the lower part of application window) and click “This Computer” link (at the left pane, under the “Publish To” section) to save the “cut” tune (which you can transfer to mobile phone and set it as ringing tone).

If you want to extract music tune from a video clip, switch Storyboard view to Timeline view, by clicking the Storyboard/Timeline drop-down list at the left pane. The Timeline view presents more advanced settings for customization.

The trick? If you want to extract audio data from a video clip in Windows Movie Maker, DO NOT drag the video clip into “Video” track! Instead, drag the video clip to “Audio/Music” track, as shown in this screenshot:

To extract the audio data, simply click “Publish Movie” button to save ONLY the audio information. If you want to cut the extracted track for DIY ringtone, just follow the steps (above) to mark the start and end, split and publish (save) the cutting!
