Uses QuickOffice S60 Freeware To Read Microsoft Office Document On Nokia Symbian Phone

The latest QuickOffice 6.2 freeware for S60v3 and S60v5 is available as a Microsoft Office viewer, allows one to open and read Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint document files on Nokia / Symbian smartphone.

According to the official site, QuickOffice 6.2 supports Office 97, 2000, XP, 2003, and 2007. In the test using Nokia 5800, however, I am able to open and read Office 2010 Word document saved in its native file format (docx) too, except for the one protected with a password to open.

Note, it is certainly fine to use Office 2010 to save password protected Word / Excel document in 97-2003 file format (doc), as it can be open and read on QuickOffice 6.2!

I reckon this is a good alternative to keep read-only sensitive information on Nokia smartphone if I am not using Nokia inbuilt security features (e.g. secure memory card with password).

Best of all, the QuickOffice File Manager is able to open zip file as well as extract (by copy function) one file at a time from the zip file, navigate to system folders (those are hidden in Nokia File Manager), well integrated with Mail for Exchange (allows one to directly open supported Microsoft Office documents in emails), display simple file properties (i.e. date/time and file size), file sorting, etc.

How To Use AlternateReader On Touchscreen Phone?

The tips of using AlternateReader on Nokia 5800 is on YouTube, but if you can’t follow my lame video guide featuring silence of me, then here you go.

As mentioned in previous post, AlternateReader is an open-source DJVU and PDF reader freeware for S60v3, S60v3 FP1/FP2, and S60v5 (a.k.a. Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2/9.3, and 9.4)

Technically, S60 or Series 60 User Interface is a software platform runs on Symbian OS.

Tips of using AlternateReader on a touchscreen smartphone

Note, AlternateReader takes time to open and display a page with graphic or image, as a result of low power mobile phone processor.

If so happen the first page of PDF e-book featuring a graphical cover page, then please be patient for the PDF reader freeware to display the content.

1) After installing AlternateReader, you can open the PDF document from the inbuilt Nokia File Manager.

2) After opening PDF document, click Options and choose “Full screen mode”. Then, tap on the touchscreen without release it for 3-5 seconds or until the context menu pops up and choose “Fit width” – this give you the best reading experience, as the page is fully maximized at best resolution the phone hardware can provide.

3) The magic of single tap and double tap:

When you’re reading on the top of page, single tap on the bottom of touchscreen is to move page down by one screen.
While the reader rendering the middle of page, single tap on the top of touchscreen is to move the page up by one screen.
To read previous page, move the page up to the top and then double tap on the top-right corner of the touchscreen.
To read next page, move the page down to the bottom and double tap on the bottom-right corner of the page

4) Slide up and down on the touchscreen for page scrolling – that is intuitive.

Uses Windows 7 Built-in Utility To Detect CPU Overheat Problem

The computer system becomes unstable (shutdown / crash) when the CPU or processor overheated seriously, be it running on the latest Windows 7 or Linux distribution.

Before that extreme case happens, the obvious empirical evidence of CPU overheat is system lag constantly – terrible system responsiveness even only fewer light-weight applications are running.

Besides CPU, overheat could also happen on motherboard, memory, graphic card / GPU.

To prove what you feel and suspect is correct, just get the figure to speak itself.

There are many 3rd-party freeware as well as in-house developed utility of respective motherboard / CPU manufacturer that can “precisely” reading temperature sensors, clock speed, voltage, etc.

In my case, I had tried Core Temp, Real Temp, Asus PC Probe and Intel Processor Identification Utility.

Now, I also try to use the utilities bundled with Windows 7 to “detect” (or to suspect with better degree of confidence) CPU overheat before using any other applications (especially non-portable application that require installation).

Uses WMIC and WinSat of Windows 7 to detect CPU overheat

Note: This tip has been tested on Ultimate and Business editions only.

1) Open an elevated Command Prompt window and run this WMIC command to check the CPU current clock speed and expected clock speed repeatedly at 1 second interval:

wmic cpu get CurrentClockSpeed,MaxClockSpeed /every:1

2) Open another Command Prompt window and run this WinSat utility to trigger the CPU processing power:

winsat cpuformal

3) Now, switch back to Command Prompt window where the WMIC output updated every seconds – if the CurrentClockSpeed is constantly lower than MaxClockSpeed, that is very likely you have encountered CPU overheat problem and I would say it is worth to install yet another program (be it a shareware or freeware) to further confirm the case.

If you’re adventurous and like to really dirty hands, you may try cleaning dust attach to the heatsink and fan, verify condition of fan and heatsink, etc. Otherwise, send it to repair shop or claim service warranty.

I was introduced a new JAVA freeware that can plot mathematical graph for given formula on smart phone.

If you work with graphs regularly (or on and off), then maybe you will like to have one installed. After all, it is freeware.

One-click To Add Elevated Command Prompt Shortcut In Right-click Menu

Start from Windows Vista to Windows 7, a user created Windows account of Administrator group doesn’t explicitly running program with true administrator privilege, unless using the system defined administrator account.

Thus, when you hold down the SHIFT key followed by right click a folder to select “Open command window here” doesn’t execute CMD.exe with elevated privilege.

To fix this nuisance, you can either log in with the system defined administrator account or apply a simple Registry hack that add an elevated Command Prompt shortcut in right-click context menu.

This Registry hack is applicable to Windows Vista and Windows 7, both x32/64-bit.

Download and extract the ElevatedCmd.zip, verify the file checksum (given at below), double click ElevatedCmd.reg to proceed:

Using Google Chrome And Firefox To Play OGV and MP4 Video

The latest Google Chrome 4.0.249.89 and Firefox 3.6 support HTML5 and allows one to play OGV and MP4 video as well as MP3 audio by just drag and drop the file to the web browser.

With a customized Windows Send To option menu, you can also right click those media files and open it with either Firefox or Google Chrome shortcut appears in the Send To menu.

Although not all MP4 / OGV video file format are supported, but those video encoded by avc1 and theo codec should be working just fine, as shown in the following screencast:
