Ohya, maybe the ads space is too valuable in your blog. So, you’ve no choice, but say sorry to replace them with alternative ads unit, as soon as possible before the Adsense Referral retired by the end of next month.

Alternative Ads Units to replace Adsense Referral ads

As suggested by the Adsense blog, users are encouraged to use either one of these two products:

• Adsense for contents, i.e. the text/image ad unit or link unit, provided blog page is not showing the maximum units of these Adsense ads unit. At the time of writing, Adsense TOS allows user to place up to three ad units on each page, a maximum of two Google AdSense for search boxes on a page, up to three link units on each page, etc.
   
• Google Affiliate Network, which is rebranded from the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network after the acquisition exercise. Similar to the AdSense Referrals program, the Google Affiliate Network earning is based on advertiser-defined actions instead of clicks or impressions. At this moment, the product is only for advertisers targeting users located in the United States.

How to send program file in Gmail or Windows Live Mail

If you prefer Gmail or Hotmail (Windows Live Mail) than Yahoo! Mail, you can use the trick I mentioned in earlier post, i.e. embed the compressed executable program files (any blocked file types) into Microsoft Office document that support embedded object feature (e.g. Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel) and then email the Office document as a normal attachment will do! (Again, I believe that this trick will fail eventually, if someone abuses it for non-ethical purpose!)

You can’t simply compress or zip the executable program file and email it. Most of the email attachment filtering system, e.g. those available in Gmail or Exchange server, can scan compressed or zipped attachment files and block them from sending/receiving if any executable program is detected!

How to embed a compressed program file into Microsoft Word document? (FLV video played by JW Media Player)

Apparently, recipient has to open this attachment with Microsoft Word (not sure can Microsoft Word Viewer open the embedded object) and uncompress program (e.g. Winzip, Power Archiver, WinRar, etc) to extract the zipped executable program file.

You can use the Ad Review Center to filter specific placement-targeted ads from appearing on your site. To block contextually-targeted ads from a given advertiser, you can use the Competitive Ad Filter.

Yes, provided you’ve enabled the Placement-Targeted Ads feature and advertisers have started to target your site(s), these ads will be shown in Ad Review Center. Otherwise, there is nothing, because those contextually-targeted ads are not shown in Ad Review Center!

I suppose that no advertisers will target WalkerNews.net (poor ranking) as they ought to be serious about branding and thus will target those really popular websites.

However, to my surprise, my Ad Review Center is not empty! But, there is one “spam” advertiser target WalkerNews.net :-(. I’ve no choice but to block it immediately!

How to block junk ads that target your site with Ad Review Center

If you’ve found some junk ads target your site in Ad Review Center, just do this:

Click the drop-box to select “Block all ad groups from this advertiser” for that particular junk ads and then click the “Save Review Setting” button block these spam ads from showing in Adsense account.

As the contextual ads is too much to be possible shown in Ad Review Center, I’ve no choice but to keep an eye on ads running in Adsense account, take a lengthy process to identify and block those junk ads in Competitive Ad Filter.

REMEMBER, if your earning drop suddenly while not much changes in site traffic, then it’s time to review the ads running on your site(s). Clean up junk ads not only increase readership experience but also get better pay from good ads.

However, some of the client software might able to overcome the restriction. For example, the Putty (wonderful Windows SSH client) offers keepalive option to get rid of “VPN router disconnects idle connection”!

1. [ Optional, only applicable if you want to save a SSH profile for convenient ] Click on the Session category tree menu, enter Host name or IP address of target host, select SSH protocol and gives it a meaningful profile name in Saved Sessions text box.
    
2. Click on the Connection category tree menu, enter a non-zero digit (indicates number of seconds) in Seconds between keepalives (0 to turn off) text box.
    
3. Go back to Session category tree menu and click the Save button.
    
4. From now onwards, whenever you load this SSH session profile and click Open button, the keepalive feature will be enabled to keep the inactive / idle SSH session from disconnected by VPN router (that enforce such rigid security practice).

So, if you’re using Putty as Windows SSH client and encounter problem of SSH disconnected after idle / inactive for some minutes, please try to configure the keepalive option.

The seplocation allows WordPress theme designer to fix the blog name to appears on either left (default) or right, in addition to the character (i.e. separator) used to separate the blog name and post title.

Before there is seplocation parameter, I used to modify wp-includes/general-template.php (one of the WordPress core files) to fix “Walker News” on the right hand of each post titles.

Having said that, now everyone who prefers post title comes first then followed by blog name can remove plugin installed for this purpose or modification made to general-template.php file.

The WordPress powered blog is easier to maintain, as the modular concept breaks it down into three components:

• core files (the engine of WordPress powered blogs),
• plugins (the extensions build on top of WordPress core engine to facilitate features and creativities enrichment)
• themes (the fashion or costume of WordPress powered blogs)

By keeping the WordPress core files intact, most general users could have less (or none) hassles to perform subsequent WordPress version upgrades.

Thus, fix the blog name appearance location in theme files (header.php) keeps the next WordPress version upgrade easier and less worries.

How to display blog name on the right hand of post title in WordPress powered blog?

Open the header.php file of WordPress theme, search for the wp_title() function call and put in the three parameters value that corresponding to separator character, display blog name (Boolean flag) and blog name appearance location.

For example, to display blog name on the right of post title and using dash character as separator, update the wp_title call in header.php theme file as this:

After saving the changes, press CTRL+F5 to force browser refresh the cached content and verify the effect.
