Shortcut To Remove Installed Application From Nokia 5800 Or S60v5

Am just discover a relatively faster way to remove installed program from Nokia 5800, which I think is applicable to other smartphone powered by Symbian OS 9.4 or S60 5th Edition software platform.

Without going through such a long way: Menu > Settings > Application Manager > Installed Apps > Options > Uninstall, you can try this alternative:

1) Go Menu > Apps, which is the default folder storing 3rd-party programs.

If the application icon was moved (via Options > Organise) to appear on Menu screen, the trick is applicable too.

2) Tap on the application icon and slide it aside then release – this is to select the program icon (highlight it) without activate / execute it.

3) Click Options and then select Remove – isn’t this is a “better” way to uninstall apps from S60v5!

Note, it is only possible to uninstall 3rd-party apps but not those bundled with Nokia device software update, unless referring to “unusual” method which I yet to know how (if you do, please be kind to share). Good luck.

If you’re looking for a true S60v5 PDF reader freeware for Nokia / Symbian smartphone, think about AlternateReader and forget about buying QuickOffice Adobe Reader LE 2.5.

AlternateReader is an open source project based on Poppler and DjvuLibre, initiated by kind Vasily Kharitonov, to develop a DJVU and PDF reader for Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 (i.e. S60 3rd Edition, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, S60 5th Edition).

In the test using Nokia 5800, AlternateReader is capable to open a 34MB PDF document file without complaining memory error!

As you can see in this video, AlternateReader is slow when rendering a page with graphic / image (due to low power CPU of the phone), but it is responsive when opening those plain text pages:

Nokia Photo Browser: A Must-have S60v5 Photo Browser!

Nokia Photo Browser is still the must-have free S60v5 photo browser for my Nokia 5800. I prefer this touchscreen photo browser than the one out of the box, simply because it makes use of touchscreen to easily zoom in and out an image or just enlarge image partially on the point of touch.

What are the Nokia Photo Browser features?

Besides the touchscreen-aware feature, Nokia Photo Browser is also an accelerometer-aware apps, i.e. images automatically rotate between landscape and portrait mode according to screen display.

The face recognition is something worth to mention too. Say you’re looking an image of buddies sitting on staircase, you can easily zoom in to view each of their smiling looks by just double tap on one of the faces, and then a green box appears to activate face detection. Now, just slide the touchscreen and Nokia Photo Browser automatically move to display the next face detected in the image.

Other basic functions included are send and delete image, nice gallery sliding effects, elegant and clean user interface (thanks to touchscreen), etc.

Though one can download Nokia Photo Browser from Ovi Store at no cost (except for data packets), isn’t it better to include or replace the default Gallery photo browser with this goodies in the latest Nokia 5800 firmware? I wonder why Nokia doesn’t do it :-(

How To Activate Nokia 5800 Sensor To Silence Call And Snooze Alarm

If your Nokia 5800 can display in landscape mode as you rotate the music smartphone, very likely you can silence call and snooze alarm clock by turning the phone too.

Having said that, when the touchscreen is facing upward, turn the phone so that touchscreen faces downward will activate the accelerometer sensor to mute calling ringtone or snooze the ringing alarm clock.

Enable Nokia 5800 accelerometer sensor to silence call and snooze alarm

1) Click the middle button that lit on by white color LED to bring up Menu screen.

2) Click the Settings icon

3) Click the Phone icon

4) Click the Sensor Settings icon

Nokia 5800 v40: How To Answer Or Mute Incoming Call?

Nokia 5800 v40.0.005 introduces new interface to answer or “silent” call when the touchscreen and keys are locked. This new touchscreen interface is also applied to stop or snooze alarm clock. If you already know how to stop / snooze alarm clock, you should know how to answer call or activate the silence call function.

If your Nokia 5800 is yet upgraded to the latest firmware, just do it and experience it, by connecting the music smartphone to a stable Internet broadband via WIFI and activate the Firmware Over The Air feature (FOTA) to perform in-the-phone firmware upgrade in no time.

With this latest Nokia device software, the following user interface for handling incoming call is only available when the touchscreen or phone is locked:

To answer call, you have to slide or swipe the ANSWER trail from left to right, as hinted by the green arrow animation.

To silent the call (i.e. to put the calling ringtone to silent), just unlock the phone by swiping or sliding the UNLOCK trail from right to left, as shown by the blue arrow animation. As soon as the phone is unlocked, the silence button is activated to mute the incoming call ringtone.

Depends on settings, you might able to silent call by turning the phone (say when the touch screen faces up, overturn the phone to put the touchscreen faces down).

How To Calibrate Nokia 5800 Touch Screen?

Suppose the Nokia 5800 technical spec is trusted, then this smartphone is using resistive type of touchscreen. With reference to Embedded.com on How To Calibrate Touch Screens, a device with resistive-type touch screen almost always require to apply calibration algorithm before it is used for the first time.

Over the time, the touchscreen might have to recalibrate for better touch precision. If you press 1 but it activates 2 in the numeric keypad, then it is time to perform touchscreen calibration.

Step by step: Nokia 5800 touch screen calibration

There are three hard buttons below the touchscreen. Press the middle, white button to access Nokia 5800 Menu screen and then tap the Settings icon.

Next, tap the Phone icon to proceed with Phone setting screen.

Now, press the Touch Input icon to access the touchscreen related settings.

In the Touch Input screen, scroll down to bottom and tap the Touch Screen Calibration option.

With reference to the animated circle, tap the center of target with a stylus. Until all 4 circles are pressed accurately, the touchscreen calibration process is considered done successfully.

Fix Nokia 5800 v40 Touchscreen Issue

Here are two potential fixes to resolve Nokia 5800 touchscreen problem. I have to repeat again, that these fixes do not guarantee fit your case, especially if the touchscreen is broken or faulty.

Touchscreen calibration: When the touchscreen is not response exactly on the point of touch or tap by finger or stylus, then this is likely a touchscreen calibration issue.

If not mistaken, the Nokia 5800 technical specs states that this smartphone is using the resistive touchscreen type. Over the time, the resistive touchscreen might not response correctly to the point of touch or tap. To fix this software issue, you need to perform an easy tweak called touchscreen calibration.

To calibrate Nokia 5800 touchscreen: Click the menu key > Settings > Phone > Touch Input > Touch screen calibration. There you are prompted to tap centre of target with stylus, where the 4 circles (target) at the corner animates one by one to guide user complete the touch screen calibration process.

Potential v40.0.005 firmware bug: I am not sure this “bug” or scenario happened in earlier Nokia device software version.

During the first encounter, I thought the touchscreen hang. At second glance, however, I realized the touchscreen locked but the display light lit on as if it was unlock and active for input:

This is different experience to me. As to what I recall, the Nokia 5800 touchscreen backlight is dim and a message alerts user to use keyguard switch, when tapping the locked touchscreen.

How to fix this? Well, you can only pay attention to the little key appears on screen – if this icon appears on the top end of display, then just use the keyguard switch to unlock the touchscreen before continue touching or tapping the locked touchscreen.
