How To Enable 64-bit Internet Explorer In Windows 10?

If you’re using 64-bit Windows 10, you can configure Internet Explorer to run in 32-bit or 64-bit mode. Yes, it’s a setting that turn it on and off; there is no dedicated 64-bit IE11 installer for Windows 10/Windows 8.1, except for Windows 7.

Turn on 64-bit IE11

1. Press ALT+X to bring up Tools menu and select Internet Options (uses arrow key and Enter key to select).

2. Go to Advanced tab and tick “Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode*” option under Security section:

How to verify if 64-bit Internet Explorer is used?

The user agent string of 64-bit IE11 shows “Win64; x64” keyword:

So, to check IE user agent string, type this simple javascript in IE Address bar and hit Enter:
javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent)
NOTE:
1. If you copy and paste it to Address bar, make sure type the missing javascript: keyword again.

2. If you type it, make sure it’s case-sensitive – that javascript will shows you “undefined” if useragent is entered, for example.

Likewise, a 32-bit IE user agent contains WOW64 keyword (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit; Windows on Windows).

    Hi Walker,
Thanks for great tips & tricks!
What’s the advantage of having 64bit mode enabled for IE10?

64-bit is more secure, for example ASLR will be more effective in 64-bit system due to much larger address space for application to store data randomly in memory.
