Here are two of many ways used to change Windows 7 default application for opening particular file type, e.g. set Foxit Reader as default program to open PDF file instead of Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on Windows.
The first option – right click the file and select “Open with” followed by “Choose default program…”:

The second option – if there is no “Open with” option in context menu, right click the file and select Properties followed by “Change” button on General tab:
Whichever option you’ll used, you should be seeing “Open with” dialog box to choose your favorite application installed on Windows and set it as default program to open that particular file type (tick the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”, if this check box is not ticked):

If the program you’re looking at doesn’t shown in “Recommended Programs” or “Other programs”, just click the Browse button to locate it (e.g. portable program that is click-and-run and kept on data disk partition or USB disk drive).
