How To Open FTP Link Using Internet Explorer?

You might not able to open and access some of the FTP page links or URLs unless the Internet Explorer is configured to use Passive FTP mode.

This is particularly required if you access public FTP server behind firewall or DSL router modem. The following screencast, for example, shows how I used IE8 on Windows 7 to access the official RedHat public FTP server to download archive of RedHat Linux ISO images:

As shown in the YouTube video, that RedHat FTP URL is valid but IE8 just cannot display the page content and looks like the FTP site is down.

Apparently, that is not the case. Right after enable “Use Passive FTP” setting of IE8 (below), the FTP page content is rendered on screen successfully:

Configure IE8 to use passive FTP mode.
  1. Click Windows 7 Start button, type inetcpl.cpl and press ENTER to open Internet Properties dialog box.

  2. Go to Advanced tab and tick “Use passive FTP” check box.

Closes all Internet Explorer windows and reopen the FTP link (above) – it should be working now.
