How To Configure IE8 To Access Or Browse FTP Server?

IE8 or Internet Explorer might not able to browser or display FTP page if it accesses the FTP server behind firewall or DSL router modem, even if the network security or proxy server allows access to public FTP servers on the Net.

As shown in this YouTube video (below), I could use Firefox 3.6.x or Google Chrome 7.x to access the RedHat FTP server that hosts archive of RedHat Linux installation CD image files, but failed on Windows Internet Explorer:

Fix the IE8 cannot browse or access FTP page problem
  1. Open IE8 and press ALT+T to bring up Tools menu then select “Internet Options”. Alternatively, click Windows 7 Start button, type inetcpl.cpl and click ENTER key.

  2. Go to Advanced tab and tick the “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)” check box.

  3. Click OK button to close Internet Options dialog box and restart Internet Explorer (if necessary).

Now, IE8 should be able to access and display FTP pages correctly :-)
