How To Fix Windows Update Error 80072EFD In Windows 7?

If you move from one network to another and suddenly find out Windows Update no longer working properly, then it is likely caused by WinHTTP proxy server configuration, especially if you see this 80072EFD error code (which means cannot connect to Internet).

I made a post about how to fix this after first encounter in Windows Vista, and it is still applicable in Windows 7, as the fact of Windows Update relying on same infrastructure.
Windows Update uses Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to efficiently download patches and updates from Microsoft servers, in order to minimize impact on user experience, such as preserve the responsiveness of other network applications, automatically resume file transfers after network disconnects and computer restarts, etc.

BITS itself relies on WinHTTP service to communicate with HTTP server on HTTP/1.1 Internet protocol.

In brief, Windows Update relies on BITS which in turn relies on WinHTTP to work properly.

If the Windows 7 and/or network doesn’t support / enable Web Proxy Auto Detect (WPAD), then you’re required to configure proxy setting manually.

While you have done so in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Windows Live Messenger, etc, and see them work properly, you can’t find where to configure Windows Update proxy server setting.

But now you should already know that Windows Update is referring to WinHTTP proxy server setting.
You need to open an elevated Command Prompt window to execute these netsh commands in Windows Vista or Windows 7.

To check Windows Update / WinHTTP proxy setting:
netsh winhttp show proxy

To configure Windows Update / WinHTTP proxy setting (replace the IP and port to yours):
netsh winhttp set proxy 192.168.233.20:8080

To disable Windows Update / WinHTTP from using proxy server:
netsh winhttp reset proxy

For those who are using Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, you should use proxycfg instead.

Microsoft support article KB-836941 details a long list of potential solutions to fix various Windows Update errors code.
