FAQ: What Is Windows 7 Bootable USB Drive?

Is Windows 7 bootable USB drive same as Windows 7 Live USB? No, they’re not the same. In fact, the latest Windows OS is still far away from Live CD capable.

Live USB is much like Live CD, which is referring to capability of boot and run operating system directly on a USB storage device (e.g. USB flash drive or a USB external hard disk drive).

Then, what is Windows 7 bootable USB Drive? Well, it’s closely identical to a normal Windows 7 DVD used for Windows 7 installation. Instead of using a DVD storage medium that requires a DVD-ROM drive to read, it’s now on a ubiquitous USB drive.

Thus, it’s like duplicates or burns the Windows 7 DVD image to a USB drive, then you can install Windows 7 using this “bootable” USB drive.

What is the advantage of Windows 7 bootable USB drive? The only one word I can think of now for this question is “convenient”.

Imagine that how easy to carry around a tiny USB drive, like Kingmax Super Stick mini USB flash drive (inset), as compare to a rather bulky DVD-ROM.
Kingmax PIP patented USB flash drive Super Stick Mini.

Most importantly, you hardly find a DVD-ROM drive attach to super mobility type of laptop or notebook, especially the popular Netbook (thanks to the successful Asus Eee PC in year 2007).

All in all, it’s a big relief for those people who want to install Windows 7 on a computer system that commonly does not come with a DVD drive.
I don’t have a solid statistic to tell but I strongly believe that all “modern” computer systems are able to boot up from a USB storage device (by configuring BIOS boot up sequence) at least on those computer systems capable running Windows Vista / Windows 7.

On the other hands, most of the “modern” notebook featuring super mobility tag trying very hard to reduce every possible gram, thus optical drive is not commonly bundled.

How could you create a bootable Windows 7 USB drive? It’s extremely easy at this moment, after Microsoft Store releases a tiny program (948 KB) called Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, for Windows 7 users to create a Windows 7 bootable USB drive in no time.

Although there are not short of third party tools, but I truly appreciate an official tool like this from Microsoft itself, to get the job done. (Btw, the name of “Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool” doesn’t seem good enough to tell people what it is actually used for).
