Windows Live Messenger Does Not Display Music Playing In Windows Media Player

Problem: Windows Live Messenger is not showing or displaying title of song played in Windows Media Player, i.e. none of the MSN contacts can see what song you’re listening to.
Reason: In order to display song or music title as “Personal Message” in Windows Live Messenger, both Windows Media Player and Windows Live Messenger must be configured for this feature.
Needless to say, the song or music must be playback in Windows Media Player (version 9 and above only).
(Note, it’s possible to display information of music playback in non-WMP player. But for this post, it’s about WMP and WLM :-).
Lastly, please be reminded that this feature is only available on Windows 2000 and above.
I think the second and third reason is straightforward. So, is time to look at how to configure Windows Live Messenger and Windows Media Player to display the song title you’re listening to for the online MSN contacts:
Configure Windows Live Messenger to display music title as personal message
Go to Windows Live Messenger, click the down-arrow icon of Personal Message box and click Show What I’m Listening To.Alternatively, go to Tools menu, click Options and then the Personal option on left pane, make sure the Show song information from Windows Media Player as a personal message check-box is checked.
Configure Windows Media Player (version 11 on Windows Vista SP1) to show song title in Windows Live Messenger
In Windows Media Player, press ALT+T to bring up Tools menu, go to Plug-ins sub-menu and make sure the Windows Live Messenger Music Plugin is checked.
Note:
The song title display in Windows Live Messenger, change accordingly as Windows Media Player playing the playlist from track to track.
Once the music / song stop playing (press STOP not PAUSE, or simply close Windows Media Player), the last personal message before you playing the music/song is displayed in Windows Live Messenger (it’s empty if nothing was set there).
For Windows 7, Windows Live Messenger will not show music playing by Windows Media Player 12 unless the songs are added to Windows 7 Music Library.

Hi…I just installed the new Windows 7 and with everything that goes with it Windows Media Player 12 and new windows live messenger…but I have this problem with show what I’m listening..the music starts and it shows the song name but as soon as it finishes it goes blank and than it won’t show any other song…I checked million times and it is set as it should be in msn “show aht I’m listening” and in media player…tools …bla bla bla..plug-ins…windows live…I really don’t know what could be the problem…
Thanks so much, only site that helped :D
thank u ,now it shows.
For those who use windows 7 an have a problem with showing the song title on live msn…yes the problem is that you make a whole playlist but windows live msn shows only the first song and than it goes blank…I don’t know why but you must play the songs from shared folder for example c:users\Zoki(mine)\mymusic….I stored my albums there and the songs appear just fine on the messenger’s status bar…I’m not some kind of a computer freak, but I was searching on the net and found that it has to do something with the shared folders (why…I don’t know)…
but I for example have rather strange problem….I’m using windows live messenger 14,with WMP12,running on 64 bit windows 7…and I had not any problem with the msn plugin until couple of days ago…The problem is I had windows live msn plugin and lyrics plugin installed also, and they worked great, but now everytime I close media player the next time I run it the plugins disapper I mean like they haven’t been installed…but the funny thing is when I reinstall the lyrics plugin also appear the msn plugin too if it was always there …. I would like to see someone with a similar problem…it is not so serious but it is annoying… I really like to know why is this happening is it because of windows 7 bug or anything else …but please don’t say that I have to click “show what i’m listening and enable the windows live msn plugin in WMP 12 cause I know that and they worked fine, but now they just disappear form the WMP plugin list…TNX in advance :)
hahaha I can’t believe I found out what the problem was with disappearing plugins I’m using 64 bit windows 7 and there are two program files foders
c:program files
c:program files(x84), so for some reason I replaced the shortcut with the one without the msn plugin so I tried starting WMP from the other folder and there it was…this is not a big deal but so that you all know someone may have this problem too sometime and looking for answer as i was
Thanks for your comment. I searched for so long to come behind. Well, its not as satisfying as i had hoped. I dont like libraries, even more Win and and its WMP one. But MS seems to force us to deal with it.
By the way: It doesnt have to be the “My Music” folder, but you have to set the folders in WMP and let it catalogue all. Once you have done this and all files are in the library, you can open also a playlist from the original source. WLM will now switch and show the following titles.
I dont know the real english path names, I use a german system, but if it would help: WMP Library>Organize (left top)>Organize Library>Music>add Folder
Unfortunately I have to check now my music if there are playlist everywhere and also check all ID3 Tags, so i can open titles by name, album…and can be sure that WMP finds all. :(
Addition:
My speculation, MS would force use intentionally to use the WMP library, seems to be fact. First: Theres no technical reason why something that worked fine so far now doesnt. A bug like this should have been fixed by now. Second, and main reason: I saw an official technical report about the improvements of Win7 and the implementation of WMP. To cut a long story short. We all know the option to send informations to make the WMP better. MS makes statics of all our activities and learned that most of us dont use the WMP library and open files and lists per click and drag&drop. A thorn in its side.

It work….but u miss the part of delete the defaults and leave as defaul the one you choose and wah-llah u got it son!!!
just update the library/play list and now check your msn.
You dont really understand you. Sounds just like that what I did. “update library”
In my case all media have to be listed in the WMP library. Otherwise WLM only displays the first song. In WMP11 it wasnt necasery. So (i think) in the “Options” has to be set “Add played media to Library” and you either have to change the path of the “My Music” folder to the right one (when not) or add it in WMP.
Only after that I could open playlists from the original source and WLM showes the upcomming track.
For me its over and done with. Im happy. :)
ups, I meant “I dont…” :)

I had the same problem as many above, the windows media msn plugin got unchecked somehow, and it took me a while to find the aforementioned plugin, so here’s the path:

Thank you so much! :)
Thanks :D
OMG such a great page. :D
This was super-helpful! thanks!
In Windows 7 and the new windows live messenger. The options have changed. In the messenger app go to the mmore options menu and in the top left hand make sure you are in the “personal” field. Towards the bottom you will see where it says show info about what i’m listening to. Put a check mark there. Next open your windows media player. Now press the Alt button on your keyboard to enable the file menu and go into the tools – plugins and enable windows live.
Thank U, so much!!! :)
