How To Edit And Rewrite Post Slug / Permalink In WordPress 2.5?

The latest WordPress release to the end users for installation is version 2.5.1. If you haven’t upgraded your WordPress powered blog to 2.5.x, please do so for the sake of security!

If you’ve just upgraded or is running WordPress powered blog for the first time, do you know that WordPress allows author to edit or rewrite the post slug to a search engine friendly format?

You may style the post title with punctuation marks or grammatically beautify it with colloquial words. That’s for the humans who read it to feel good (and so digg it out to the top).

But, that original post title might not be friendly to search engine, i.e. not good for SEO (shorts for search engine optimization).

Although WordPress automatically removes any punctuation marks from the post title for permalink, it can’t automatically rewrite or phrase the post title that’s optimized for search engine.

So, that’s the post slug function in WordPress powered blog, where it allows you to rewrite permalink to something that you think is best for search engine optimization.

Prior to WordPress 2.5.x, the post slug widget appears on the left sidebar.Prior to WordPress 2.5, there is a widget on the right sidebar, called “Post Slug”, to rewrite permalink of a post. In WordPress 2.5.x, there is no such Post Slug widget on the right sidebar.

So, where is the “Post Slug” in WordPress 2.5? Well, the “Post Slug” is simply called Permalink with a “Edit” link that appears under the Title text box!

As shown in this screenshot, I rewrite the default permalink (post slug) of this post, by adding “or” to replace the “/” punctuation mark. (Remember to click “Save” button to retain changes made.)
