Why Adding Wordpad Shortcut In Sendto Menu

I learnt about Send To menu in Windows 95. Since then, I’ve always recommended my friend to add Wordpad / Notepad shortcut in the Windows Sendto folder, which will later appears as an option in the Send To option menu!
How to add or delete shortcuts in Windows Vista Sendto options menu? Where is the Vista Sendto folder?
Why adding Wordpad or Notepad shortcut in the Send To menu?

Wordpad and Notepad are both bundled with all Windows versions, including the latest Windows Vista that I’m using now.

These ASCII editors can SAFELY open and view the content of any files type – be it a pure ASCII text file, an executable program file, a video or music file, a picture or animated graphic file, a data file, Registry data file, or even a dangerous virus program file, etc.

Whenever I received an unknown email attachments or unknown files downloaded from Internet, I used to right-click the file and “send” it to open with Wordpad or Notepad. I can’t tell it’s a virus file (that’s tKaspersky Antivirus program responsibility), but I’m curious to look for human readable text inside these file!

Similarly, I used to open a Windows Registry data file (.reg file extension) with the Wordpad/Notepad shortcut in Sendto context menu.

Another file type would be NFO. By default, NFO file extension is known as Windows System Information file type. (Double-click a NFO file type will open it in the Windows System Information program.) However, many Warez groups are regularly storing Warez information (e.g. serial number or license activation code) in a ASCII text file and saved it with NFO file extension!

How to open NFO file, a warez information file type, without using the default Windows System Information program in Windows Vista?

If double-click the Warez NFO filem, an error message similar to the picture (above) will pop up – System Information cannot open this NFO file. It might be corrupted or an unrecognized version.

So, how to open a Warez NFO file type? Again, I used to right-click the NFO file and “send” it to open in Wordpad/Notepad!

Another useful function of using Wordpad/Notepad shortcut in the Sendto context menu would be open Linux-based ASCII file or text file without the Windows file extension.

As the different of file encoding between Windows and Linux, the Windows Notepad couldn’t recognize the “line break” correctly and thus render Linux-based ASCII file in a weird format. So, I used to “send” it to open with Windows Wordpad that understand those “line break”.

Besides that, the Wordpad/Notepad shortcut in the Sendto context menu is also useful to quickly open file without the Windows conventional file extension (mostly Linux/Unix file), e.g. hosts file or services files inside the %windir%\system32\drivers\etc?

Interesting article Walker. It indeed comes in handy if you have the Wordpad item listed in your send to menu. Did you know that you can use WordPad to browse the web in case you were missing an installed web browser on your machine or restricted group policies and adminitrator’s control took away the ability to open any web browser to surf the web ? I did an interesting article on this not too long back, if you are interested you can visit http://indiawebsearch.com/content/how-to-use-wordpad-to-browse-the-web
