Please try this:

1) Connect the monitor to laptop and power them on.

2) Based on your experience with that laptop, guess the time you will need to enter password (BIOS, OS, etc).

3) Let's say it takes about 30 secs to prompt you BIOS password and then 1 minutes later to see OS login prompt, then enter those passwords at specific time.

4) Assume the laptop is ready at OS prompt after 2 minutes and the OS is able to install driver for that monitor automatically, press FN+CRT/LCD hotkey.

With reference (quite old but concept applicable):

Guys.

I got an ACER laptop here and the damn screen's died, I wanted to plug a monitor into it so I can at least save my stuff before I send it off to be fixed.

Can anybody tell me how to get to the option and change to an external monitor solely with hotkeys alone?

If so I would owe ya BIGTIME. All my writing's on there and there be NO way I wanna mess my story up now.

Thank you.

Great list. I would have preferred the Explorer/Windows specific hotkeys to have been listed separately from the standard application hotkeys, even when they apply in Explorer (ctrl-arrow keys, etc.). But that's a minor point. Thanks for such a comprehensive list.

One more great hotkey. This is possibly only a Windows 7 hotkey (I don't have a Vista/XP machine to check):

WINDOWS + P Alternate between video display configurations ("P" stands for projector)

It works like the key combination on my laptop keyboard Fn + CRT/LCD.

Very handy for those laptopers with external keyboards and external displays....
