You can then copy them to another medium before re-installing. This is a pretty easy task (too easy if you ask me) so whatever happens your data is recoverable unless your hard disk is physically broken. By the way, if your thinking of using Ophcrack, I shouldn't bother. I have tried it many times on simple passwords and not only does it take forever it has failed 100% of the times.
